Hawaii - Hilo

We had the pleasure of exploring Maui and Kauai last year with Uncle Tim and had such a great time, that we decided to check out the Big Island this year. And we were thrilled to have Adam's mom (Grammy) joining us! We split our 10 days between the 2 sides of the island (because it's very big), first staying in Hilo on the east side then Kona on the west side.

Arriving at the airport in Hawaii
The beach park across the street from our rental house

 View from our front yard

 Lovely run along the coast
 The first of many waterfalls

Frozen treats as big as your head!
View of the active volcano Kilauea at night

 Sea turtles everywhere
 Steam vents from the volcano
 Kilauea during the daytime

Short hike inside a lava tube

Barren land where everything was destroyed by the lava. Some plants are returning

 Huge crater
 Sunset from our porch
Swimming area that is naturally heated from underground lava flow

In order to see the lava up close, Adam and I biked 4 miles then hiked 2 miles (each way) to see the current eruption. This used to be a neighborhood before the lava destroyed it. There are still a few houses left standing but no one lives there now.

 Hiking over the lava flow
 Lava pouring into the ocean

Hot!

 Beautiful coastline
 Traveling is so tiring.
